CPSIA

The CPSIA is the US federal law governing children's products: it mandates third-party laboratory testing, a Children's Product Certificate, permanent tracking labels, and strict limits on lead and phthalates for anything designed or intended primarily for children 12 and under.

Why it matters

CPSIA testing must be done by a CPSC-accepted third-party lab. In-house testing, which is enough for most general consumer products, is not accepted for children's products, so budgeting for external lab time and cost is essential from the start of development.
