Selling on Amazon in the EU: a compliance checklist
What a marketplace seller needs before listing a physical product for EU buyers, from responsible-person duties to the paperwork Amazon itself may ask for.

Identify your product's category and which CE directives apply
Start from what you actually make, not the marketplace. Pick your product category and see the full list of EU regulations, testing standards and documents it triggers. Wireless, battery and children's features each add their own rules on top of the base list.

Appoint (or become) the EU responsible economic operator
The EU General Product Safety Regulation requires a responsible economic operator established in the EU, whose contact details buyers can access, before a consumer product may be placed on the EU market.

Complete conformity assessment and sign the Declaration of Conformity
For any CE directive your category triggers (electrical safety, EMC, radio equipment and similar), test against the relevant harmonised standards, compile the technical file, and sign the EU Declaration of Conformity before affixing CE marking.

Put GPSR safety and traceability information in your listing
Product identification, your contact details and the EU responsible person's contact details need to reach the buyer, whether on the product, its packaging, or an accompanying document referenced from the listing.

Expect the marketplace to ask for your compliance documents directly
Marketplaces increasingly request Declarations of Conformity, test reports and responsible-person details on top of the legal minimum. Marketplace seller policies change independently of EU law, so check the current seller terms rather than assuming last year's rules still hold.

Track the deadlines that affect your specific product
Several EU rules, including the Cyber Resilience Act and staged Battery Regulation duties, are phasing in over the next few years. Check which ones apply to your product type and when, well before you need to relist.
